Punaluu Black Sand Beach.jpg

Have you ever seen a black sand beach? Due to constant volcanic activity, you will find white sand and black sand on the island of Hawaii.

Located on Kaʻū's southeast coast, Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is one of Hawaii's most famous black sand beaches. At the exit of Volcanoes National Park and towards the south of the island, is Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach, one of the many black sand beaches in Hawaii. This fine sand owes its color to the constant volcanic activity of the region.

Located between the towns of Pāhala and Nāʻālehu in Kaʻū, the jet black shores of Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms line the upper edge of the sand, and you can also spot large honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) basking on the beach.

The beach has a picnic area and restrooms so you can have lunch while experiencing the unique sensation of black sand between your toes.
